Announcing the new Caribou Bog Outdoor Center!
The Caribou Bog Outdoor Center project is now complete!
The Orono Economic Development Corporation (OEDC) has repurposed the former Taylor Bait buildings as the Caribou Bog Outdoor Center, a four-season outdoor center. The building is located off the Taylor Road in Orono and is centrally located within the Caribou Bog Conservation Area (CBCA), a nearly 7,000-acre corridor of conservation lands and extensive trails extending from the Bangor City Forest north to Old Town. The new Center serves to enhance the overall "experience" for Nordic skiers, mountain bikers, birder watchers, runners/walkers, and the general public.
The Center provides family users an indoor facility to change, sit, picnic, and socialize, and the lower building offers a ski waxing room and equipment storage. The venue was designed for meetings, functions, and educational programming, with a recently expanded parking area adjacent to the Center. Nickerson & O’Day, Inc. of Brewer was the General Contractor and completed the project in January 2023. OEDC is partnering with the Orono Land Trust (OLT) and the Penobscot Valley Ski Club (PVSC) for interim operation of the Center.

The completed project’s cost, including building renovation and expanded parking, was $384,300. OEDC was awarded a $165,000 Recreational Trails Program (RTP) matching grant through the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry toward the renovation, leaving a fund-raising balance of $219,300. As of November 2023, we have raised $123,200, so ~ $96,000 remains to be raised. Please consider donating to this community resource at these suggested levels of giving:
